CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine)
西洋医学に基づく標準治療を補完する医療，もしくは標準治療を代替する医療の総称。日本国内では，自費診療による治療（医科保険が適用されない医療）は実質的に補完代替医療といえる。
例え高度先進医療であっても，その科学的根拠 (evidence) が不十分であれば標準治療ではなく補完代替医療に含まれることになり，医科保険も適用されない。

現在利用できる「最良の治療」であることの科学的根拠 (evidence) を持つことによって当該疾患患者に対して推奨される治療，もしくは一般的に広く行われている治療 日本国内では医科保険が適用される治療と実質的に同義
